Povidone-Iodine (PVP-I), also known as Betadine, is a disinfectant used for sterilizing the skin before and after surgery. Betadine is used to disinfect the patient’s skin and the surgeon’s hands. It is also used for washing small wounds. Betadine is available in both liquid and powder forms. Additionally, Povidone-Iodine has widespread applications for local disinfection and prevention of wound infections. Betadine is used in first aid for treating scrapes, burns, blisters, and minor cuts.
The antiseptic effect of Povidone-Iodine lasts longer than tincture of iodine because it is absorbed slowly by soft tissues; thus, Betadine is more suitable for longer surgeries. Chlorhexidine also has a similar effect, but its toxicity should also be considered.
